FILLMORE is a spoken word jazz tribute to the myriad of artists who were a part of the Fillmore District - the acclaimed “Harlem of the West” - during the 1940s and 1950s. We pay homage to their great artistry!

In addition to the COPUS quartet, guitarist Noshir Mody brings his sweet Wes Montgomery sound to the mix and Omar Clark Taylor on congas brings FILLMORE to life. Engineer/producer Jimmy Hobson from MarinWest Studios brought his magic to the mix.

The track also includes the dynamic sounds of brother-sister duo singer Michaela Miller and rap artist Danye Miller in a way that fuses the contemporary with tradition.

To qualify, we had to produce a short video performing a song live, and that it must include a tiny desk somewhere in the video.

The entries by artists of every stripe are fun, creative and some are outright outlandish. Before he blew up, Fantastic Negrito's video shot in a cargo elevator won the day. The rest is history.

Winners go on to perform on their “All Songs Considered” production to a mass audience, so we pulled out one of our new joints from our upcoming Vinyl LP called “The Dilemma” which is a shout out to all poets, writers and musicians.

We've got a few of the new album`s 10 songs in the can and expect to wrap up the recording process by month`s end. For now, let's just say it's hella good.
copusmusictag:copusmusic.net,2005:Post/65517062021-02-15T00:00:00-12:002021-04-21T05:14:21-12:00FROM ONE CHICK TO ANOTHER - A Tribute to Chick Corea
I started my musical study on the piano at age 8. I worked on the classics with my favorites ranging from the lyricism of Debussy, the boldness of Rachmaninoff, to the discordance of Paul Creston. My parents had an an amazing collection of classical and jazz albums and my older brother was into British rock, so my ears were alert to the broad possibilities of musical creation. When a friend gave me a copy of some Chick Corea songs such as Crystal Silence and Space Circus, I was off on my way to improvising some passages, to writing full songs, to now full-scale compositions.

In the late 1990s I was wandering through Europe with my then-boyfriend scientist who only listened to classical music pre-1700, preferably played on old, original instruments. We were in Munich one day and happened upon a music store and I was lured in. On the bulletin board there was a small flyer announcing a solo concert by Chick Corea happening that night. What?! I needed to be there. We went to the box office and discovered the event was sold out, so upon my urging, we returned to the concert hall before the show to see if there were any scalpers. We lucked out with securing two tickets (with no markup in price!). It was a small space, maybe 150 wooden fold-out seats, bare stage except for a 9’ grand piano. Chick commanded the place and I was enraptured. At the end, the audience could not express their appreciation strongly enough with just clapping - so people started stomping their shoes and boots on the wooded floor until the room reverberated with thunder. Needless to say, the encores were emotionally charged.

I returned to the Bay Area and started composing the pieces for my debut solo piano album, The collection included a piece called in tribute to mr. c (I was into all small letters at the time). I certainly have improved in my writing and also discovered the importance of mastering after mixing, so I don't circulate those works much. However, they were the foundation on which much stronger pieces were built. (I just ran the track through Logic and added some EQ to enhance the sound quality.)

Fast forward to the 2000s. I heard that Chick would be performing a dual piano event with Herbie Hancock at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley. Two of my favorites in one place?! It is the only concert I have attended in any genre where the piano tuner worked his magic before the show and during intermission. Herbie and Chick were cutting it up so strong that the lower piano strings needed adjusting. The two grand pianos faced one another with their magnificent curves intertwined and the tops removed. I sat above and drank in every note, every nuance. Herbie was beautifully dressed and Chick was in T-shirt and sneakers, but their power, grace, beauty matched note for note.

I then was on Chick’s email list and upon receiving a lovely Christmas card from he and Gayle, I sent an online note thanking him for his influence on my musical creations. I received a heart-felt note from a member of the staff which I appreciated. I hope my message was conveyed.

I now have released 18 CDs of music in various genres with different ensembles of artists, had my music on many compilations, have scored for 3 independent films, and have earned many nominations and awards for my compositions. Thank you, Chick Corea. RIP.

Greetings,

We are stoked...to let you in on a family secret: the publishing launch of a novel, authored by Royal's Mother, entitled "The Window Man" - under the banner of Proud Son Publishing headed by Royal's brother Alton - is underway and available on Amazon in Paperback and Kindle formats! Next stop - NetFlix!? With your support, it's possible. Launched today, February 8, 2021...the fourth anniversary of our beloved Mother's passing.

Alton's in-depth research of situations and circumstances revealed in the book, coupled with his genealogy tracing abilities and immense will power compelled him to pull off the publishing of this dynamic American story. The events of her story take place in California's Los Angeles/Hollywood, Santa Barbara and San Francisco areas with Beaumont, Texas represented in dramatic fashion as well.

Below is Alton's description of the effort:

"I am happy to announce the launch of a book, written by our late mother, about the first seventeen years of her life. It is primarily a memoir, with just a bit of fiction to augment her youthful recollections. Her story is a thrilling, powerful, poignant, yet love-filled story, told with a good measure of humor that will arrest your senses and obtain your attention from start to finish. I assure you that the ending will surely surprise the most avid reader." ~ Alton Edwards, Proud Son Publishing

On the night of her passing, February 8, 2017, we were headed south for a gig at Kulaks in North Hollywood - an Indie Collaborative Pre-Grammy event. Royal had received word of her death from his son Kareem while en route to the airport in San Francisco. We decided to go through with the performance on the 10th and showcase her favorite of Royal's poems called "If In Life" ***

You can make a huge difference with your review of the first chapter...or the entire 300 page novel!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

One day when I was a teenager my mother came home from her philosophy class all excited about discussing truth for 2.5 hours. My father, an engineer, said: “That’s ridiculous. Truth is not telling a lie!”

But is it that simple? Fake news. Social media confrontations. Black lives matter. Cell phone documentation of the police. COVID-19. What is truth?

COPUS is a melodic rap ensemble that has addressed these concerns for 20 years. The combination of melodies and rhythms mixed with spoken and sung words to elicit thought has been the focus of this San Francisco band since its inception. Audiences – whether live or virtual – have been entertained, educated and uplifted by the quest for truth, beauty, and spiritual awareness despite everything.

The single TRUTH is scheduled for release July 27. It could not come at a more appropriate time. “When you feel the truth as it stares in your face and all you see are lies running rampant in space – do you rise to the occasion and get up on your feet or do you sink in the pit and let them cause you defeat?” With lyrics and music by Wendy Loomis and poetry by Royal Kent, COPUS bassist Patrick Mahon and drummer Levon Washington added their wizardry to the creation and TRUTH was born.

COPUS has earned nominations and awards for their excellence from ASCAP, the Hollywood Music and Media Awards, and the Clouzine International Music Awards. They have performed throughout the U.S. at such notable venues as The Bitter End and Feinstein’s 54 in New York, the San Francisco Jazz Center, the World Bank in Washington DC, and the Cutting Edge Festival in New Orleans. TRUTH is their seventh release; it will be in the 2020 contention for ‘best melodic rap performance’ by the Recording Academy (GRAMMY Awards).

“COPUS is a musical group with some of the most talented musicians that I have yet come across. The music is a mixture of Spoken Word, jazz, a touch of blues and a hint of classical styles. This music is a little difficult to compare to anyone else because I have never really heard anyone like this group. The jazz styles are very complex and the music that is created is absolutely masterful. These compositions are amazing with just the music, but then you get the added pleasure of the smooth spoken word vocal styles of Royal Kent.” ~Michael Allison, MusicDish.com

TRUTH is available at copusmusic.com/truth as well as on iTunes and Spotify.

What if We? will be premiered in Washington DC at the World Bank Building Resilience event on Tuesday, October 29,, followed by a second performance at the Forest Trends’ 20th Anniversary celebration the following night. The piece was composed by ASCAP Award-winning composer Wendy Loomis in collaboration with her band COPUS and science organization The ClimateMusic Project.

The 10-minute piece is a reflection on sea level rise over the course of this Century. It begins with the worst case scenario represented musically with driving rhythms and minor chords interspersed with fictional but science-based newscast headlines from the year 2045 and sonifications derived from a reference study on climate change and sea level rise. After a long drum-driven crescendo, the piece breaks abruptly into youth singing: “what if we? - what if we - what if we… change?”

The second half of the work is more optimistic with the synthesizer sound switching to piano, the chord structure becoming more melodic and major, the rhythm more gentle, and the sonifications more harmonious. This is the mitigated section representing a more optimistic scenario in which humans take aggressive action now to rein in emissions. The lyrical poem “The Eagle’ by poet Royal Kent makes a powerful statement about the beauty and necessity of preserving our natural world. What if We? concludes with the youth repeating their questions.

Composer/oianist Wendy Loomis and poet/spoken word artist Royal Kent formed COPUS two decades ago. COPUS is an acronym for Creation Of Peace Under Stars. They have always dedicated themselves to using their music and words to effect positive change. The Bay Area-based band has received awards and nominations for its provocative poetic jazz; they have performed throughout the U.S. at places including The Bitter End in New York, SFJazz in San Francisco, and the Cutting Edge Festival in New Orleans. The quartet includes bassist Patrick Mahon and drummer Levon Washington.

The ClimateMusic Project communicates the urgency of action on the climate crisis by combining climate science with the emotional power of music to drive meaningful action. COPUS connected with the project last year during their event “Play for the Planet” which was associated with the Global Climate Summit in San Francisco.

Berkeley-based filmmaker Kim Anno was the final piece of the labyrinth of What if We? In conjunction with the score, she created a 10-minute video that visually depicts the various results from climate change. Raised near the ocean on the west side of Los Angeles, Kim Anno came of age in the political flux of the 1970s; her father was a beatnik physicist and her mother a nurse and civil rights activist. Her artistic expression first as a painter and now filmmaker was a natural fit with The ClimateMusic Project and COPUS.

COPUS Multimedia LLC just joined forces with Airbnb Experiences to present their “Poets & Composers Salons” monthly at Clarion Performing Arts Center in Chinatown, San Francisco.

Co-founders poet/spoken word artist Royal Kent and composer/pianist Wendy Loomis have always been about musical and literary inclusion. When Wendy and Royal met 20 years ago, each brought to the table a robust background in arts integration.

Royal Kent spread his wings as a producer of several of the original Public Access cable television shows in the country through Viacom's Channel 25 in San Francisco. This was after a stint in community radio with the city's KPOO FM station where he volunteered as announcer and disc jockey. His objective as producer has been and remains local artist recruitment and showcase for television, radio and stage.

Wendy Loomis began her artistic career at age 4 when she took her first dance lesson – and age 8 when she began studying piano – and never looked back. She composes music for COPUS as well as for her solo recordings, other ensembles, and indie films; plays piano, guitar and percussion; has taught and encouraged musical growth in people from age 4-94; leads a ‘drumming as meditation’ group.

What makes these two people unique is that with all of their abilities, nominations, awards, and accolades, they are the first folks to share the spotlight with others. When they formed the band COPUS 20 years ago, they set the standard of including people of all ages, ethnicities, religious and sexual affiliations, instruments, and training expertise derived both from the street and from universities. They have led poetry and music workshops for young people as well as performed for many charity events. Additionally, they began welcoming other artists presenting original works in various genres to be guest artists in their productions at live/work spaces, theaters, clubs, and festivals.

“Poets & Composers Salons” were launched formally at a house concert series in 2015. People were amazed at the world-class talent, the warm ambience, the mingling among audience and artists. Because of its success, however, a bigger venue was needed. The connection with Airbnb Experiences and Clarion Performing Arts Center seemed the most organic and logical conclusion.

The debut show will be Saturday, July 27th, with guest artists former Poet Laureate Genny Lim and positivity singer/songwriter FarI Shields. Band COPUS – an acronym for Creation Of Peace Under Stars – will bring its magic to the table with poetry/spoken word by Royal Kent, composition/piano by Wendy Loomis, bass by Patrick Mahon, and drums by Levon Washington.

WHEN: July 27, 2019

WHERE: Clarion Performing Arts Center, 2 Waverly Place, San Francisco CA

TICKETS: https://abnb.me/l1Vn2S4RHX?user_id=2482948&s=2

WEBSITE: http://www.copusmusic.com; http://www.clarionmusic.com

CONTACT: copus@copusmusic.com

Hello,

In addition to writing, performing, recording and producing music,
I also teach private piano lessons at my home studio. copusmusictag:copusmusic.net,2005:Post/60766202018-05-29T12:00:00-12:002018-05-30T09:16:48-12:0011 to 75: A Bird’s Eye View of the GRAMMY Awards

In January 2018 the GRAMMY Awards were to be held in New York at Madison Square Garden. In November and December of 2017 I was traveling in Asia with my martial arts colleagues during which time Royal and I had to transact the purchase of GRAMMY Award ceremony tickets via our sketchy online communications. Tickets go on sale to Academy members at a singular moment in time and the likelihood of slipping through the online purchase site before it all crashes is daunting. (I later learned of someone who had attempted to buy her ticket at the exact moment and was told she was #562 on the waiting list.) Royal, however, was successful and was able to purchase 2 tickets for us in the nosebleed seats for $200 each. Seats near the stage go for up to $1400 each. Nominees and VIPs, of course, get their tickets for free.

There are approximately 15,000 submissions in 86 categories. The process is first to be considered (which COPUS was) and then that is whittled down to the 5 nominees in each category or from 15,000 down to 810. We were not in that 5%. However, making the most of the situation as always, our newly-hired booking manager and I bombarded New York clubs to secure a COPUS gig during GRAMMY week to make the trip doubly worthwhile. COPUS is a member of the Indie Collaborative, a group of 2,000 independent musicians, and they had organized a show at Feinstein’s 54 Below in Manhattan, so we would be able to perform one song there during the evening. We also landed a gig at an arthouse in Brooklyn. 3 of the 6 members of the band were able to make the trip, so off we went.

We stayed at a hotel only 5 blocks from Madison Square Garden, so Royal and I were able to walk there. To witness the swarm of streets barricaded and limos and glitzy outfits was fun, like a kid in a candy store. The afternoon show, from 3-6pm, is not televised. 75 awards were handed out to artists in the genres that don’t make enough huge money to be on the TV portion: reggae, world music, Americana, classical, jazz, new age, spoken word, etc. This part of the event is held in a mid-size theater for several hundred people. The show was phenomenal with such highlights as the powerful singing of Jazzmeia Horn, the light and beauty of India Arie, and an emotional acceptance speech by Reba McIntyre who said that it was our job as artists to heal hearts. And then there was new age pianist/composer Peter Kater who has been nominated 13 times and finally won. Paul Shafer and his band did a brilliant job of playing 45-second interludes while winners approached the stage; each interlude was in the style of the winner. His witty – and a bit edgy – banter about winners who didn’t show up to accept their awards made a strong statement.

The televised portion of the GRAMMY Awards was to begin at 7:30pm, so we followed the crowd toward the Arena. Here the Academy was to present 11 awards to the biggest money-making artists in the music business. Meanwhile, hungry by now, we joined the masses in purchasing over-priced either popcorn or pretzels or burgers from vendors. There was nowhere to sit, so people in tuxes and gowns were leaning against walls or sitting along the floor to eat junk food. The place was freezing and women in sleeveless gowns had to decide whether to look cute and freeze or to look not so cute and be warm. After the unsatisfying ‘dinner’, we made our way to our seats. The energy of 18,000+ people was palpable.. To add to that a show being aired live, the tension of the biggest competition in the music business, the anticipation of seeing stars, the lights, and just to be a part of this huge crazy phenomenon was exciting. Performances by Elton John with Miley Cyrus, Sting, Sza, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga all were enjoyable, but the emotional impact of Keshia surrounded by singing ladies in white and Kendrick Lamar’s opening “XXX” number about gun violence in America were definitely the powerhouses. The crew was incredible. To watch the smoothness of set and lighting changes and grand piano moves during the length of commercial breaks was quite amazing. During all of the glitz, I did have intermittent visions in my head of Royal and me sweeping up the Cell Space performance studio after a gig one night with still to look forward to moving equipment to the car and then double-parking on a busy street to again move equipment to the 3rd floor apartment, but regardless I still had a great time.

It took awhile to exit the arena as the escalators were not working and people were struggling to descend in high heels. Royal and I walked back to our hotel, stopping by a corner store to buy some wine. The man behind the counter mumbled something about all of the traffic and streets closed and I replied that it was because of the GRAMMY Awards 5 blocks away. He answered: “Oh, was that tonight?” Royal and I had a good laugh about that as we toasted each other on the patio outside the hotel, freezing our butts off in New York. What an experience!

Evolution Of A Hit
By Wendy Loomis

January 2017, San Francisco. After the election I felt the great anger
and ensuing malaise that surrounded folks in the Bay Area - like the fog itself.
Not one to stay depressed too long, I sat down at my keyboard and began to play.
From the power of the Most High came a complete song. Sometimes it comes in
small bits that need to be developed. And sometimes – like this time – it comes

as one complete unit: song structure, chorus lyrics and melody, rhythms, transitions, ending.

Steady for justice

Ready for peace

Steady for justice

united we are.

It was an anthem – to hope, to belief, to peace through justice. Excited I shared it with my long-time creative/business/co-founding partner, Royal Kent, and he was excited as well. Inspired he sat down and wrote an amazing poem filled with the COPUS theme from the beginning: Creation Of Peace Under Stars. The band began to rehearse the piece. Although we mourned the loss of our beautiful flute player, Monica Williams (who had decided to move on from COPUS to other pursuits), we welcomed the newly-arrived singer Amorelle Applin who brought a vital energy and eagerness to COPUS. Veteran bass player Patrick Mahon was thrilled with the power of “Steady for Justice” and he jumped into amping up the arrangement at full force.

Very soon I knew we had a hit. Royal and I talked about needing to bring COPUS to the next level and decided to record the single, but this time with an ace producer. Searching online I found New York-based, GRAMMY-nominated producer Yaron Fuchs who had produced tracks for a long list of folks including John Meyer, Sting, Herbie Hancock, to name a few. After many great phone conversations and plans, we set up a recording session at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco. We hired drummer Robbie Hammett and guitarist Vito Gregoli (whom Royal and I had met in Hollywood at a GRAMMY weekend Indie Collaborative event).

Photo session was held at Café International in front of the incredible mural by Kemet that depicts beautiful people from the world’s cultures. Royal and I met at an open mic years ago at the Café. He walked up to me after hearing me perform a wild, atonal improvisation on keyboard with a cellist and said: “We should work together!” – and handed me his business card. The rest, they say, is history.

We collectively chose to call the single “We All Bleed Red (Steady for Justice)”. In Royal’s poem he says: “We all bleed red, but we’re all unique.” And now the single is ready to be released August 4. On August 9 we will submit the single for ‘best rap song’ consideration for the 2018 GRAMMY Awards. A pre-release review of the song came out today. “Through the new single ‘We All Bleed Red’ you get the full picture of their ambition as they look to help heal the growing divide between the people and remind us of the values that are most important in this world we share. .. Through ace musicianship and a wild, bright & bold sound, they capture the magic they’re seeking to create on “We All Bleed Red” – it’s like a combination of Quincy Jones meets Baz Luhrmann…theatrical & dramatic in nature with great storytelling, set in an old-school setting that incorporates modern-day movement in the structure and reflecting on the current state of the world lyrically. “ (JER, SleepingBagStudios.com)

Give thanks for transformation from negative to positive, for the humility of visions transmitted, for the powerful combination of “ambition and intent”.

COPUS will be the feature band in the middle of the evening with talented artists performing before and after. COPUS – an acronym for Creation Of Peace Under Stars – is a rap/jazz/fusion ensemble that presents powerful lyrics and beautiful melodies for the conscious listener. The group includes poet/composer Wendy Loomis, poet/spoken word artist Royal Kent, flutist Monica Williams, bassist Patrick Mahon, drummer Greg McRay, and vocalist Barbara Jaspersen. “COPUS could become legendary if given the opportunity to thrive!” ~Michael Allison, CEO MusicDish.com.

Artists have the opportunity to sign up in advance on the COPUS website to secure a spot. COPUS suggests patrons come early to secure parking spots and perhaps have some dinner at one of the many great Richmond neighborhood restaurants before attending the show. MUNI line 31 Balboa stops in front of the venue and the 38 Geary is 2 blocks away. Wheelchair accessible. The earliest known May Day gatherings were found in many northern European countries with pagan festivals such as Walpurgis Night (named after the female Saint Walpurga) where bonfires, feasting, dancing, and music drove away the memories of a long winter. Here in modern day San Francisco, Copus Music and Special Guests have joined up to create a May Day event that promises to shake loose all the dampness from the wintry rain and economic struggles – lifting the spirits of the people in a way only music, dancing, poetry at a cool private location can do! COPUS has added the dynamic percussion playing of Omar to round out the power ensemble, so come check out the new sound and video additions. Special guests include Shelton Studio actors and poet Timothy Trygg will also perform. The event will be hosted by Matt Shelton. http://www.sheltonstudiossf.com http://www.copusmusic.com https://www.youtube.com/copusmultimedia http://www.myspace.com/copusmusic http://www.copuscatalog.com

The hardest work is done! Just show up, be present, open every door and let events unfold. Life is your stage. This is your parade. Together we can do anything. theuniverse@tut.com
